Creativity in Schools
Scherer, Marge. "Who's Creative?."Educational Leadership 70.5 (2013): 7.Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 Mar. 2013.
In this article, Scherer tells us that there is different ways of learning the words for a spelling test. Scherer says that “My colleague Reece still sings that to herself when she writes that word” the word she is talking about it beautiful. When Reece was in second grade her teacher split her class up into groups. Each group had to learn all the spelling words for that week. The groups also had all different types of readers some that were great at it and some not so much. “Reece was skeptical – such long words plus she had to work with kids who couldn’t even read.” After being in the groups and seeing that the kids that could not read so well were doing so great on the spelling test everyone wanted to know how they were doing so great. Scherer also talks about different examples of creativity. “Mini-c creativity, defined in this issue by Ronald A. Beghetto and James C. Kaufman (p10.) as interpretive creativity, or having a new insight into how to solve a small problem.” Scherer goes and learns different ways that teachers are using to teach creativity in schools.
In the last few paragraphs as the article winds down Scherer talks about there being another message in the articles that talks about “creative learning: schools cannot afford to leave creativity on the back burner” In the first part of the article Scherer tells the reader that her colleague stills signs words that she learned to spell every time she uses the word. There are many of different creativity thoughts in the article. Scherer could have not had so many different thoughts but could have only had a few and talked more about just those thoughts.
This article will help me in my research because she talks about how there are different ways to learn and they can even be fun. Scherer lets us see four different ways that creativity works in schools. I think this could help me knowing that there is more than just one way to be creative in schools.
·         “The latter method, Reece remembers, was suggested by one of the kids in the lowest reading group.”
·         "There were aha moments going on in that classroom all the time," Reese remembers.
·         "Teachers who understand that creativity combines both originality and task appropriateness," Beghetto and Kaufman write, "are in a better position to integrate student creativity into the everyday curriculum in ways that complement, rather than compete with, academic learning."
Keeter, Meredith. "Let Your Students Do The Talking." Knowledge Quest 41.3 (2013): 34-35. Academic Search Complete. Web. 18 Mar. 2013.
In this article Keeter argues that people who like text only books they judge the ones who like graphic novels. This article lets the reader know that being in the library can be fun not just for studying and doing work. Keeter did a comic book for the whole school to make up the story. Keeter got a friend that is a graphic novel illustrator to make up the pictures than the school was to come up with the words. The comic book was outside the library and every day the students would put their thoughts of what the comic would say. At the end of the day Keeter would look at them all and pick winner. The winner would get a piece of chocolate delivered to their class in the morning. Everyone liked the idea and all the kids at the school joined in on the fun.
While the children at Keeter school had to make up a story line to a comic book the library was doing, the article gets close to the end and Keeter talks about how a boy that did not really like the library but wanted to win the candy. The little boy would try and try to win but never did. He got upset and stops trying, Keeter saw this happening and tried to help. The first part of the article the reader sees how a librarian feels about the library and the children at that school.
I can use this article for my research because of how Keeter uses the comic book as an example of creativity in her school. This is another way why creativity is a good thing to have in schools. It lets the students think and have a good time doing it. The article shows how the students really liked the comic books and got them into the library. I think that this could really help my argument about creativity in schools.
·          "You know this story and these characters. You have been following along every day. What do you think Joe would say next?"
·          "These people are simply not aware of the diversity and depth of graphic novels."
·         “Alex called the pages "a doodle," but I was blown away by his artistic ability, and the students recognized that the pages could have been straight from a comic book.
"Student Voices." Technology & Learning 33.8 (2013): 34-36. Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 Mar. 2013.
This article is different than most articles. It talks about how different schools use digital skills to learn. The first part of the article is about having AV equipment to video tape there schools athletics department. This was good for the students to learn how to use the equipment and that they can be creative with taking the video. The students at Marianapolis Prep School were happy to have the chance to be a part of this. The next part of the article was about photo editing. New Milford High School in New Jersey art class learns how to use the pictures they took at the museum to help with their project back at school. One student used the pictures he took to make a collage New York. The Student, Tariq Khan, uses photo montaging, color theory, composition, and digital mastery to help make his collage perfect. The last part of the article is about how students in a kindergarten class from Istanbul Turkey used digital games to help them learn and teach materials with their skills. The students first colored the two main characters for their game. The boy’s name was bubble and the girl’s name was pebble. After they got the characters done then they spoke in English to help me with pronunciation they recorded themselves. This helps the students with their creativity.
This article goes from one thing to the next. There is never just one main point to the argument. All the parts of the article talks about creativity helping the students and how digital equipment can help the students learn. While the author is talking about how digital things help the students with creativity the reader loses what the main point of the article really is.
I think I could use this article as something that might hurt or help the students. This is a good article but it jumps around to different stories that might throw me off of what my topic is. I like how it talks about using digital equipment to help with their creative side. I have not seen another article like this one so it will be a big help to my research.
·          "But taking on that level of responsibility is what has created this incredible sense of empowerment among the TechCrew."
·         The children developed their own learning and teaching materials by combining their English, IT, and animation skills, and they shared their results with children from all over the world.
·          This was an inspiring and motivational project for the children and the teachers.

The Truth about Plagiarism Reading Response

This article is about how plagiarism is a capital intellectual crime. It tell us that the most plagiarism is done by students and professor and the least serious crime is done by those that earned the late Stephen Ambrose and Dorothy Kearns. Plagiarism is a big thing in schools today. Students think that by changing a few words here and there they will be okay, but when they have to send it in and the computer looks over it the paper comes back as plagiarized. The author supported their argument by telling us who was the most people that plagiarized and how they did it.
Yes the author argued his point well. The author talked about how plagiarism was used and where people used it most. The author tells one reason that plagiarism is punished heavily. One example he used was the West Side Story and how it related to Romeo and Juliet. I dont think he left anything out and i understood everything he was talking about.
I agree with the author Plagiarism is a really big deal and when I write paper I am also making use i cite my source or make it to were it is different enough to were it is not plagiarized.
the golden lined i liked would be "The most serious plagiarism are by students and professes, whose undetected plagiarism disrupt the system of students and scholarly evaluation. I like this line because it is a big deal and some of the people that do it the most are the one that are suppose to teach us how not to use it.

Annotated Bibliography. article two

"Who's Creative?"

Scherer, Marge. "Who's Creative?." Educational Leadership 70.5 (2013): 7. Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 Mar. 2013.

Thesis: creativity in schools and how it can help with children's learning.

Evidence: "The latter method, Reece remembers, was suggested by one of the kids in the lowest reading group. Their group aced the spelling test every week for months, and the other kids became interested in learning their strategies." Is just one of the many evidence is this article about the thesis.

Organization- This article is organized by bullets

Allusion: The allusions are where the author bullet points the different types instances of creative teaching and learning.

Rhetorical Questions: There are not really any rhetorical questions in this article other then Who's Creative? that is in the title.

Repetition:  The article repeats the same words like, Creativity, schools, teacher.

Assessment of the Argument: This article is saying that anyone can be creative and come up with ideas. In the beginning of the article it tells us that an 2nd class got into groups with all types of different reading levels and studied for their weekly spelling test. This helped the students because it taught them different skills for learning. It also talks about how the author went to interviews and learned some other different ways of learning.

Article one of my annotated bibliography

1. The writer is Meredith Keeter. Meredith Keeter started her career as a librarian at a high school in North Myrtle Beach. I feel like this would help her argument.
2. The writer's purpose is to enhance the creativity in schools. The writer hopes to achieve the creativity to go in children in schools.
3. The topic that the writer decided is that creativity in schools can be looked over. This topic could be broad but it talks about how the graphics in novels are.
4. The situation for the argument is that text only can take away from the children creativity in the children.
5. The writer appeals to logic by saying that more and more ethics got involved, this also goes into emotion because almost everyday a different student won. This could be emotions because they all got excited and wanted to join in. The writer tries to establish her credibility by telling us her background and where she went to school and where she is now.
6. The argument's thesis is that helping children know that graphics novels are good but they are not the only thing out there. Because children lean more to graphic novels because they think it is less to read.
7. The writer organize the argument well by letting us know how a school library looks like and how children do lean more to the graphic novels. The arrangement of ideas are effective by letting us know how to change this and make it known.
8. The evidence that the writer uses is that her competition was doing well and she will use what she learned from the first competition for the ones later down the road. Yes the writer uses enough evidence for the argument.
9. The writer uses similes by using the comic book and graphic novels. Because she was making a comic book but talked about how the comic books and graphic novels are somewhat the same but a comic book is smaller.
10. The writer uses parallelism in the article.
11. My analysis and my overall assessment for this argument was great. I think that Keeter did a great job at getting her students at her school involved with reading and getting them in the library and letting them see that is not a scary place to be.

Higher education for all

o How would your understanding and opinions of
this article change if you knew it was written by a college professor of 20
years?
I think i would believe it more because he was a college professor of 20 years and he would know what he was talking about.

o How would your understanding and opinions of this
article change if you knew it was written by a high school senior for a history
class?
I do not think i would believe it like i would if the professor wrote it.

The writer's purpose
  • yes he states the purpose He wants you to know that people deserve a higher education
  • to encourage action
  • she is logic
  • i do not see a preconceptions about the subject

the writers audience
  • anyone that would want to go to college
  • neutral
  • the audiences holds a lot because the author would like to see everyone go to college
  • uninformed
the topic
  • higher education
  • to help people want a higher education
  • yes i understood this
the context
  • is to go to college
  • that college is not for people that do not have a lot of money
  • that college was only for the men out of WWII and people who had money

o What appeal(s) did the author use? How do you know?
talked about the difference between today and the 20th century in colleges.

5 Elements

The five elements are important because you need a writer to let you know where they are coming from. Knowing that the author will be accurate or not is by knowing the author. The writers purpose is important because you need to know what the purpose is for writing the piece. The writers audience is important because you need to know who they are trying to talk to and you might not want to read it if you are not part of the audience. the topic in also important because if there is not topic then there is no real purpose in writing the paper. you need to be able to understand the topic.  the context is also important because it helps you know where the author is coming from. these five elements are helpful to understand the writer and fully understand the paper.

Writing into the day

o Is Wikipedia a credible source? Why/why not?
Wikipedia is not a credible source because it does not always have the right information on it.

o Do you think Wikipedia should be used in
academic papers? Why/why not?
I do not think at this site should be used because it does not have the right information on it.

o When you do research for school, how can you use
Wikipedia to your advantage while maintaining the credibility of your sources
and your paper?
You could see if there was a credible site on wikipedia and maybe use it that way.

Wikiphobia: the latest in open source Reading Response

This article is telling us about Wikiphobia. It talks about how it is not accurate and can not be used as a source. Neil Waters talks about how it should not be used by students in college to cite a source. Anyone could write on it true or not so your really not getting the right information all the time on this site. Neil waters was a professor at Middlebury in the history program. The students are responsible for their sites and if they are accurate or not.
The is author argued his point well by passing the law that Wikiphobia could not be used by college students. I think he was right to pass this law because this site should not be used for anything because anyone can get on the site and change the information to something that is not true at all. i do not think the author left anything out of this I understand this article great. He gave me facts about this site and it can be false.
I agree with the author on this article. I think we should have never been able to use this site for anything. I think we should be responsible for anything we do not even out side of school work. I have never tried to change anything on the site but im sure if i try i could.
"Further, thousands of high school teachers as well as college professors who try mightily to induce a measure of critical thinking in their students' approach to sources for research grow quietly furious because the very ubiquity of wikiphobia tempts people to use it in lieu of other, more reliable sources of information. I think this quote because this is true. People are tempted to use this site because it is easy to find and if people do not know this is a untrue site people think they are doing good. Till they get there paper back and get a back grade on in they dont know why. I think we need to know about this site and that we use never use it.

Second draft

Ashley Baustert
February 25, 2013
Visual Analysis
Mrs. Keaton
Creativity Good or Bad
In this Visual analysis we will look at two different pictures on creativity in schools. The idea of the two pictures is different but somewhat the same. We will look at a picture that has kids painting on the walls of the school for creativity and so others can see. The next picture will be one that does not show creativity and how that classroom looks like.

First we will take a look at the picture of the students painting a picture on the walls of their school. This picture tells a lot about the school. It lets you know that the kids want creativity in their school and they are willing to help make sure they get it. You can tell this by looking at all the students around the wall. They also look like they are thinking and taking their time. In this picture you can see a school wall with mural. We also see yellow lockers. Shoes that the students are wearing are black and white. Students holding paint brushes with a paint rug under their feet. Paint can with paint in them and the students are using them to paint on the walls with.
On the walls you can see that there is a boy, music notes, words big and little, butterflies, and a flag. As we look at the wall we can tell that the students at this school are very creative. They care about their school and how it looks. The words on the wall could mean a lot of different things. The words at the top of the picture are big and talk about the world. We cannot see all the words at the top but maybe it is saying what the world is like in their school. There are also small words all over the wall. The small words look like the names of the students in that school.
As you look at the picture you see students working. The students look like they are wearing uniforms. If you look close you can see that the colors of what the students had to wear, they were red, blue, and white. Also looking at the students you can tell they are thinking about how to make the wall look better.
There are also lockers we can see in this picture. This tells us it is at a school and that the wall is going to be seen by everyone at that school. There are also no white spaces so the illustrator or author used all of the space to make the point that creativity in schools is a good thing.
As in the picture above tells us about creativity in schools as you look at the picture before it tells us how creativity in schools might be taken out or not there at all. As you look at the picture you see windows with green curtains hanging from. There are desks that are facing to the left of the picture. Chairs that are sit under the desk, with paper on them with flowers in the background.  This picture is very different from the one above. This picture lets us know that creativity is not in all schools but maybe for a good reason.  In this classroom as you look through the window you can see trees and more buildings out in the distance.
The desk and chairs are all in a line and in rows. They look plain and not creative at all. There is not really anything in the classroom other than the desk and chairs and paper this might be a bad thing because the students cannot use their imagination in school.  This could be also good for the students for staying focused on their school work. The creativity is lacking in this classroom and most likely in the school also. As the creativity is lacking in this picture we do not know much about the school but from what we see we have a good idea about the school also.
The illustrator or author of this picture did a great job of using all of the space. There is not a lot of white but there is a big window that does take away from the picture. As you look at the picture you see mostly the sun light but it lets you know what a classroom really looks like. As you are looking at the picture we can see outside and how it is sunning and the classroom looks like it might be on the second floor of a school.  This classroom you can tell that the students here learn their school work and do not use much creativity. This could be good for test scores but they are lacking using their creativity. This picture could also be called dark because you really cannot see anything but the sun.
As we look at the two different pictures and compare the two we see that they are very different. One tells us how creativity is in the school and what the students do to make sure it stays. The other one tells us that creativity is not needed for students to learn. The two pictures let us see how different schools are and how creativity is used for the two. These two pictures are the best ones because it shows that students really like doing things for their school to make it look better. The other picture tells us about how a high school class looks like. There are many more pictures out there that could tell us about creativity in schools but thought these were the best ones to tell the story.

Self- Assessment Reflection

1. My goals for this paper was to do all the things at we talked about in class. I did this by writing all over the picture and looking at everything on the picture.
2. I used my time great. I used the time in class to really work on looking at what the pictures look like and have within them. In class Ms.Megan gave us points that we needed to look at in the pictures to get more information.
3. I saw that after we had our workshop in class that my peers where able to help make my paper better. I used everything they said about making it better. I worked with my peers by asking them questions on how to make my paper better and when they told me something I would take it and write it down so i would remember to use it later.
4. My group help me a lot. As they read they would point out grammar mistakes i did not see and where i could talk about something more.
5. I have learned that if i write to fast i miss mistakes that should have never been made and I have learn to go slower as I write to make sure i do not have mistakes.
6. The hardest part of writing this paper was looking at everything and making sure i had everything at was in the picture. I was scared i was going to leave something out. I think the easiest part of the paper was writing the paper because after i had everything in the picture it was just making sure i put everything i wrote down in the first place. i took risk in the second picture by saying it might be lacking creativity in the school.
7. I think I am the proudest about the pictures and how i read them. I looked at everything and tried to see what it all meant.
8. I think my paper could use some improvement would be putting everything into words. Yes i believe my group helped me with how i should write it.
9. I picked two different pictures about creativity and wrote down everything i saw in the picture that might be good to write about.
